Japan Expands Skilled Worker Visas

Japan is taking significant steps to ease its growing worker shortage by expanding its foreign skilled worker visa program. The expansion now includes critical sectors: road and railway transportation, forestry, and timber. This decision aims to address the country's declining birthrate and its "2024 problem" – a potential worsening of driver shortages due to new overtime regulations.

Expanding Opportunities for Skilled Workers

Japan's government is committed to welcoming skilled foreign workers to bolster its workforce. In the next five years, the target is to admit up to 820,000 individuals under this visa program. The newly added sectors offer diverse roles including:

- Transportation: Bus, taxi, and truck drivers

- Railway: Train car manufacturing, track maintenance, and station positions.

To qualify, workers must meet Japanese language proficiency requirements and demonstrate professional skills. Those with Specified Skilled Worker No.1 visas can stay for up to five years. The No. 2 visa path offers unlimited renewals, the potential for permanent residency, and the opportunity for family reunification.
