Waiting in long supermarket checkout lines is a universal frustration. Jump n Pass, a TechStars-backed Nigerian startup, aims to solve this with an innovative mobile self-checkout platform. Their technology could revolutionize how we shop for groceries.

How Jump n Pass Works

Shoppers scan a QR code to access the store's inventory directly on their phones. They scan product barcodes, add items to a virtual cart, and pay seamlessly within the app.

"Jump n Pass makes checkout 90% faster," says Tunde Ademuyiwa, co-founder and CEO. Customers pay a small convenience fee (₦50 to ₦100) based on their total purchase.

Why Long Wait Times Harm Businesses

Jump n Pass in Action

Launched in November 2023, Jump n Pass has partnered with Justrite Limited, a supermarket chain with 26 Nigerian locations. Integration is in progress at other major supermarkets.

Trolley Blog🛒 observed Jump n Pass in use at a Justrite store. Shoppers were encouraged to "skip the queue" via in-store announcements and QR code displays. The process was straightforward, with occasional network connectivity hiccups.

Branch manager Oyiza Edwin praised Jump n Pass for its popularity, reduced cashier workload, and minimized errors. However, she suggests adding card payment options to their current transfer-based system.

Customer Reactions & Adoption

Customer curiosity is high, with some initial confusion. While several shoppers expressed interest, others were hesitant due to the convenience fee. Jump n Pass sees lower adoption among older customers, likely due to technology unfamiliarity.

Supermarkets Benefit Too

Supersaver Supermarket's regional manager, Folarin Oluwatoyin, reports positive customer response and operational benefits. They're testing Jump n Pass at their headquarters before wider rollout.

Challenges & Upcoming Features

Network issues have been a minor challenge, and a customer shared her largely positive experience using Jump n Pass at Justrite. The platform currently operates as a web app, with dedicated Android and iOS apps launching soon, according to Ademuyiwa.

Jump n Pass partners with payment providers for in-app transactions, clarifying they don't directly offer payment services.
