Google’s Awkward Android Problem: Hidden Tracking Exposed in the AI Space Race


The battle for AI supremacy between tech giants Google and Samsung, as well as the ongoing rivalry between Android and iPhone, has brought to light a long-standing issue within Android’s core. While Google has made significant strides in narrowing the gap with iPhone, particularly with the upcoming Android 15 and Android 16 updates, there’s one glaring problem that remains unresolved: hidden tracking that’s impossible to stop. This issue affects all Android users, but it’s especially concerning for Galaxy and Pixel users who were promised “on-device privacy” as a key feature of their devices.  



The AI Space Race: On-Device Privacy vs. Hidden Tracking  

Both Google and Samsung have been heavily promoting their on-device AI capabilities, emphasizing privacy-preserving processing as a major selling point. For instance, Google’s latest scam detection feature “protects your privacy by processing everything on-device.” Similarly, its controversial photo scanning tool is also done on-device, ensuring that all images and results remain private to the user.  

Samsung, which introduced hybrid AI before Google, has taken this a step further. The company claims that its approach to AI personalization, from the launch of its first AI phone to its continuous innovation of on-device AI, is designed to never compromise on privacy.  

While these advancements sound promising, they are overshadowed by a much older and more troubling issue: hidden tracking.  



The Hidden Tracking Problem  

A recent study conducted by Trinity College, Dublin, has exposed Google’s practice of tracking Android phones through “cookies, identifiers, and other data that Google silently stores on Android handsets.” This tracking occurs through default apps that come pre-installed on Android devices. Shockingly, this happens without user consent or the option to opt out.  

When confronted about this issue, Google responded by stating, “The researcher acknowledges in the report that they are not legally qualified, and we do not agree with their legal analysis. User privacy is a top priority for Android, and we are committed to complying with all applicable privacy laws and regulations.”  

However, the Trinity College team revealed that they had informed Google of their findings and delayed publication to allow the company to respond. Google’s response was brief and did not address the legal aspects or point out any errors in the report. The company also did not comment on whether it planned to make any changes to the cookies and other data stored by its software.  


A Pattern of Privacy Concerns  

This isn’t the first time Google has faced criticism over its privacy practices. The company has also delayed the deprecation of cookies in Chrome and controversially resurrected digital fingerprinting. These decisions suggest a pattern of prioritizing data collection over user privacy, despite the company’s public focus on on-device AI processing.  

This raises questions about whether Google’s privacy push is more about marketing than actual privacy improvements. For Samsung, this creates a tricky situation. While the company is striving to catch up with iPhone, it remains tied to Android, meaning its users are also affected by these legacy tracking issues.  


The Samsung Dilemma  

Samsung’s position is particularly challenging. Unlike Google, which controls both the hardware and core software of its Pixel devices, Samsung relies on Android as its operating system. This means Samsung cannot roll out security fixes or OS upgrades as quickly as Google can. As a result, Samsung users are left vulnerable to the same hidden tracking issues that plague other Android devices.  



What Needs to Change?  

To address these concerns, there needs to be a thorough review of hidden tracking practices that occur without user consent or the option to opt out. This includes both “silent” Android tracking and digital fingerprinting. Introducing default opt-outs across the board would be a step in the right direction.  

Until these changes are made, the promises of on-device privacy may need to come with an asterisk. While Google and Samsung continue to innovate in the AI space, they must also prioritize addressing these long-standing privacy issues to truly earn users’ trust.  



The Bigger Picture: AI Privacy or Marketing Hype?  

The AI space race has undoubtedly brought exciting advancements to the tech world. However, it has also highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability when it comes to user privacy. As Google and Samsung continue to compete for dominance, they must ensure that their privacy claims are more than just marketing buzzwords.
